I trained in classical violin using the Suzuki method from childhood. I didn’t enjoy classical repertoire as a child, so I quit playing for a number of years. However, I later developed a love of bluegrass music and picked up the violin to learn fiddle-style music. Using YouTube lessons and ear‑based practices, I learned a system for improvising and navigating chord changes that lets me accompany most contemporary songs and adapt them for fiddle. My approach includes chopping and rhythmic bowing, plus soloing from a double‑stop perspective. If you are an intermediate player and want to know how to play along with contemporary songs, perform fiddle music, and improvise confidently, then I can teach you!
I began on violin but switched to guitar at 15 to play rock and metal. I taught myself electric guitar from YouTube, learning riffs and solos with heavy distortion. I later became interested in singing, and picked up the acoustic guitar to accompany my singing. That shift expanded my interests into bluegrass, folk, blues, and pop. I now specialize in bluegrass flat-picking, but my rock/metal foundation plus experience across styles lets me teach guitar to most ability levels and styles.
I began playing in bands and discovered that a good bass player is often the most difficult member to find. So, I bought a bass, recorded myself, and learned how to play. I learned that restraint is powerful: playing the right note at the right time supports the song more than showing off. I teach players how to craft simple, effective bass parts that serve the arrangement. I primarily use a pick but I also teach beginner fingerstyle technique
I gained live-sound experience playing in bands and learned to set up and operate basic PA systems and digital mixers. I frequently run front-of-house sound while performing at private shows, and I have mixed shows for others at the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar, the Silver Dollar Bar, the Virginian, weddings, private parties, and conferences. I teach practical skills for using a basic sound system and digital mixer, focusing on reducing feedback and improving overall balance.
Through my experience playing multiple instruments, I discovered that I’m most passionate about arranging songs, which led me to record and write my own music. I discovered that a strong arrangement can elevate a modest song, while a weak arrangement can dull a great one. Through experimentation I learned some of the fundamentals of recording, arrangement, and songwriting. I teach songwriting, arrangement, and basic home-recording techniques to help songwriters develop ideas and produce listenable demos.

Noel:
“I have been getting have been getting guitar lessons from Mark for almost two years. He is an excellent instructor. He was able to quickly assess how he could help with my style of playing, and then targeted his teaching to improve the skills I need to play what I want to play. The practice drills he’s provided have been super helpful. Mark also has an amazing ability to identify aspects of my playing that hold me up a bit, and suggest ways to overcome them. The lesson plan he keeps and regularly updates for me is a terrific resource. The videos we do at the end of almost every lesson are a treasure trove, I refer to them all of the time when I practice. You will not find a better guitar teacher than Mark Engel!”
